Matthew Leming
Research Fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital
Matthew Leming is a research fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital, focusing on designing deep learning models for dementia and Alzheimer's diagnostics using brain imaging data.1 He completed his PhD in Computational Neuroscience at the University of Cambridge from 2016 to 2020, where he studied functional brain activity and developed deep learning models to analyze group differences in brain activity using functional MRI data.1
During his PhD, Leming worked with a dataset of 50,000 functional MRIs and designed specialized deep learning models to classify data by various factors such as sex, resting-state/task, and autism.1 He also developed algorithms for preprocessing and balancing fMRI training data, accounting for confounding factors like intracranial volume and head motion.1
Prior to his PhD, Leming earned a Master's degree in Computer Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2015-2016) and a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from the same institution (2011-2015).1 He has received several awards and scholarships, including the Gates Cambridge Scholarship, the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, and the Hojjat Adeli Award for Outstanding Contributions to Neural Systems.1
Currently, Leming continues his research at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was awarded the FMD Population Healthcare Sciences Research Fellowship in May 2023, providing funding for his postdoctoral training.1
