Matthew Bailey

Matthew Bailey is Professor of Renal Physiology at The University of Edinburgh.13 He received his BSc (Hons) in Physiology from the University of Manchester and his PhD in Renal Physiology from Imperial College London.1 Bailey has extensive training from prestigious institutions, including University College London (UCL), Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) in Paris, and Yale University.13

His research focuses on how high salt intake in food affects the cardiovascular system and kidneys, leading to hypertension and renal disease.1 Bailey has published over 100 papers, with an H-index of 42 and over 5,000 citations.12 He currently holds grants from Kidney Research UK and the British Heart Foundation, and is a Principal Investigator for the £3M BHF Centre of Research Excellence at Edinburgh.1

Bailey's main project areas include:

1. Mechanisms contributing to salt-sensitive hypertension
2. Effects of high salt intake on the brain and behavior
3. Molecular basis of AKI-to-CKD transition1

In addition to his research, Bailey is actively involved in teaching and academic leadership. He serves as the Director of The British Heart Foundation 4-year PhD programme at the University of Edinburgh and is the Dean of Quality for the College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine.1 He is also a Fellow of The Royal Society of Biology and has received several awards, including the Insignia of Honour from the Spanish Society of Nephrology.1
