    Matthew Miller

    Dr. Matthew Jordan Miller is a pioneering urban planner and scholar, holding degrees from prestigious institutions like Stanford University, MIT, and the University of Southern California. As the first African-American to earn a Ph.D. in Urban Planning from USC, he focuses on the intersection of arts, creative placemaking, and Black-owned businesses in urban development.

    Currently a Provost Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design, Dr. Miller is the first African-American man to join the faculty of the Department of City and Regional Planning. He is deeply engaged in researching and theorizing around the geography of Black commerce, culture, and creativity in the United States, with his upcoming book based on his doctoral work.

    With a rich background in academia and practical experience, Dr. Miller has contributed to various governmental agencies and nonprofit organizations, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the City of Stockton, and the National Endowment for the Arts. His multidisciplinary approach to urban studies incorporates photography, ethnographic storytelling, and geographic systems analysis, emphasizing the importance of cultural belonging in placemaking.

    Dr. Miller's exceptional intellectual and civic achievements have been recognized by prestigious institutions such as the National Academy of Sciences, the Association for Collegiate Schools in Planning, the NAACP, and the California State Legislature. His cultural and artistic endeavors have garnered attention from major publications like the New York Times, the Boston Globe, and the Philadelphia Tribune.

    His diverse educational background includes a Ph.D. in Urban Planning and Development from USC, a Master of City Planning from MIT, and a B.A. in Urban Studies from Stanford University. Prior to his current role, Dr. Miller held positions at renowned organizations such as the California Center for Public Health Advocacy and the Stanford University Martin Luther King Education and Research Institute.
