Mary Alice McCarthy is the founder and senior director of the Center on Education and Labor at New America. Her work focuses on the intersection of education, labor, and workforce development, aiming to enhance economic mobility and reduce inequality.125 McCarthy has contributed to various media outlets, including Washington Monthly, The Atlantic, and Forbes.1
Before her role at New America, she worked with the U.S. Departments of Education and Labor, where she was involved in policy guidance and technical assistance initiatives related to community colleges and career pathways.14 McCarthy holds a PhD in political science from the University of North Carolina, where her research focused on the impact of neoliberal economic reforms in Chile. She also earned an MPA from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.1
In addition to her work at New America, McCarthy serves on the board of directors for Achieving the Dream and is part of the national advisory board for Rutgers University's John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development.13
