Martin Obeng, also known as Kwaku Kwaakye Martin Obeng, is an Adjunct Faculty member at Brown University, specializing in African drumming and dance. He is a master drummer, singer, dancer, composer, and band leader, with a rich background in Ghanaian music. Obeng has been teaching at Brown University since 1988 and is known for directing the Ghanaian Drumming & Dancing Ensemble and the World Music Ensemble.13
His musical journey began at the age of five in Ghana, where he served as the Royal Court Drummer for the high chief of the Aburi-Akuapim area. He has performed internationally and has a diverse repertoire that includes traditional Ghanaian music as well as creative fusions with genres like Afropop and Afro-jazz. Obeng has also released several recordings and has collaborated with notable musicians throughout his career.12
In addition to his role at Brown, he has served as an adjunct faculty member at other institutions, including the University of New Haven and the Rochester Institute of Technology. His contributions to music education and performance have made him a prominent figure in the field of African music in the United States.
