    Martin Mai

    Professor of Earth Science & Engineering at KAUST

    Martin Mai is a Professor of Geophysics in the Earth Science and Engineering program at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia.13 He joined KAUST in June 2009 as a founding faculty member and has been a full professor since November 2011.3

    Mai's research focuses on the physics of earthquakes and the complexity of earthquake phenomena, including earthquake-source imaging, dynamic rupture modeling, and earthquake mechanics.2 He also studies seismic wave propagation, strong ground-motion properties, and conducts research on the structure of the Earth's crust and upper mantle beneath the Arabian plate.2

    In addition to his academic role, Mai serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America (BSSA) since July 2021.23 He has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers and has supervised numerous graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.2

    Mai's educational background includes:

    Throughout his career, Mai has held various positions, including Senior Researcher at ETH Zurich from 2006 to 2009, before joining KAUST.3 He has also been recognized for his contributions to the field, serving as president of the Seismology Division of the European Geosciences Union from 2015 to 2019.2
