Mark Richardson, MD, PhD is a prominent neurosurgeon and neuroscientist who currently serves as the Director of Functional Neurosurgery at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).12 He holds several academic appointments, including Charles A. Pappas Associate Professor of Neurosciences at Harvard Medical School and Visiting Associate Professor of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.12
Clinical Expertise
Dr. Richardson's clinical expertise encompasses:
- Awake brain mapping for epilepsy and deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery
- Robotic-assisted stereotactic surgery
- Network surgery approaches to epilepsy, including Responsive Neurostimulation
- DBS for movement disorders and psychiatric indications
- Laser thermal ablation for epilepsy123
Research and Contributions
In 2011, Dr. Richardson founded the Brain Modulation Lab, which focuses on applying a systems neuroscience approach to improving surgical treatments for epilepsy and movement disorders.2 Some notable achievements of the lab include:
- Conducting the first studies describing simultaneous cortical and subcortical recordings during speech
- Identifying biomarkers of therapeutic responsive neurostimulation for epilepsy2
Dr. Richardson is also actively involved in pioneering clinical trials related to brain modulation, particularly in closed-loop brain stimulation and gene therapy.2
Background and Education
Dr. Richardson completed his MD-PhD program at Virginia Commonwealth University's Medical College of Virginia and his neurosurgical residency at the University of California, San Francisco.3 Prior to joining MGH in 2019, he served as the Director of Epilepsy and Movement Disorders Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) from 2011 to 2019.2
Dr. Richardson is internationally recognized for his work, having published numerous papers and book chapters. He is also a member of the Executive Board of the American Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery.3
