On the representation side, I care a lot about leveling the playing field, and strongly believe that implicit "culture" and running on relationships work counter to that. I'm very pro writing things down, and stating norms.
 
On the tech side, I recently finished a long journey working with a team improving stability and operability of our caching infrastructure, and am working on extending that to stability, simplicity and sustainability gains in other areas.

On the tech side, I introduced the Envoy networking proxy to Slack as a way to streamline service discovery and service-service RPC. I worked on the team that rolled it out as an RPC sidecar. Dusted off the network control plane that we built at Turbine Labs, worked with the team to update it for Slack's use and rolled it out internally. Went from there to stabilizing Consul, building load tests, failure reproductions, and patching the guts of its RPC so it works under degraded network conditions. Currently un-mothballing ancient open source infrastructure we run (mcrouter) and restoring it to an operational state.

Got to witness first hand the challenges of second system syndrome, suboptimal team dynamics, and individual heroism. Learned a great deal about development processes and organizational best practices as a result.

Developed a virtual cockpit system. I wrote most of the cockpit simulation software, and the interface between that software and a configurable hardware rig that was able to simulate a wide range of cockpit configurations.
