Mark Jabbal
Associate Professor in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Nottingham
Mark Jabbal is an accomplished professional with a strong educational background in aerospace engineering. He holds a PhD in Experimental Aerodynamics from The University of Manchester, earned in 2008 after completing an MEng in Aerospace Engineering with first-class honors.
Mark's career has been enriched with diverse experiences. He commenced as a Factory Floor Operative at Michelin and later transitioned into roles such as P/T Sales Assistant and Barista at Marks and Spencer. Subsequently, he worked as an Aerodynamic Consultant at Flow Science Ltd, a Graduate Teaching Assistant, and a Postdoctoral Research Associate at The University of Manchester.
His career progressed to lecturing roles, where he served as a Lecturer in Aerospace Engineering at Brunel University London and eventually as Assistant Professor at the University of Nottingham. Currently, Mark holds the prestigious position of Associate Professor and Programme Director of Aerospace Engineering at The University of Nottingham, where he has been instrumental in establishing an undergraduate aerospace engineering program.
Mark Jabbal's expertise lies in aerodynamics, specifically focusing on aerodynamic flow control for drag reduction, experimental fluid mechanics, modelling and optimization, as well as vehicle systems integration. Additionally, his research interests extend to heat transfer for thermal management.
An exemplary project led by Mark involved guiding a team of aerospace engineering students in the development of an aerial-deployed, autonomous glider that successfully flew 22 miles across the Bristol Channel. This achievement was featured on the BBC and garnered recognition through the Royal Aeronautical Society Young Persons Award in 2013.
Mark Jabbal is not only dedicated to advancing research in aerospace engineering but also to fostering public engagement in aeronautics. As a STEM Ambassador, he has delivered various workshops and talks at notable events like the Manchester and London Science Festivals, The Inspiring Futures Foundation, EDT Headstart, and Royal Institution Engineering Masterclasses.
In recognition of his efforts towards promoting gender equality in STEM, Mark Jabbal was a Finalist in the WISE (Women Into Science & Engineering) Man Award 2019, showcasing his commitment to improving gender balance within his organization and the broader industry.
Mark's impact extends beyond academia, with his involvement in the Aerodynamics Specialist Group of the Royal Aeronautical Society further demonstrating his dedication to advancing the field of aerospace engineering.
