    Maria Sonevytsky is an Associate Professor of Anthropology and Music at Bard College.25 She previously held a position as Associate Professor of Music (Ethnomusicology) at the University of California, Berkeley.14 Sonevytsky completed her Ph.D. in ethnomusicology at Columbia University in 2012.13

    Her research focuses on post-Soviet Ukraine, exploring topics such as folklore revivals, the effects of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster on rural musical repertoires, and sound and sovereignty in Ukraine.4 Sonevytsky is the author of "Wild Music: Sound and Sovereignty in Ukraine" (2019), which won the Lewis Lockwood Award from the American Musicological Society.45

    In addition to her academic work, Sonevytsky is an accomplished musician, playing accordion, vocals, and piano.4 She has been involved in various musical projects, including founding the Chernobyl Songs Project in 2011.4

    Sonevytsky's career path includes teaching at Bard College from 2014 to 2017, then at the University of California, Berkeley, before returning to Bard College in 2022.45 She holds a BA from Barnard College and has held postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute and the University of Toronto.4
