    Maria Robu

Principal AI Scientist at Touch Surgery

Maria Robu is a highly accomplished professional with a strong background in computer vision methods for augmented reality, rigid and non-rigid shape-based registration, and deep learning methods for semantic segmentation.

During her PhD studies at UCL, Maria focused on developing computer vision techniques to enhance augmented reality systems in laparoscopic liver surgery, aiming to overlay 3D models of the liver and sub-surface structures extracted from pre-operative CT scans onto laparoscopic videos.

Her research contributions include an intelligent viewpoint selection method for pre-operative planning in liver surgeries, a semi-automatic approach for global rigid registration between pre-operative 3D liver models and intraoperative surfaces, and the use of convolutional neural networks for semantic segmentation, non-rigid registration, and soft-tissue deformation simulation.

Maria has been involved in various projects, including the MICCAI 2019 ABCD challenge, where her team successfully predicted fluid intelligence scores using brain scans of 10-year-old children.

Her educational background includes a PhD in Augmented Reality in Abdominal Surgery, an MRes in Medical Imaging, an MSc in Computer Graphics, Vision, and Imaging, and a BS in Cybernetics, Statistics, and Economic Informatics.

Maria Robu currently serves as the Principal AI Engineer at Touch Surgery, leveraging her expertise in AI and computer vision.
