Professional Background
Mare Stewart is a passionate educator with extensive experience translating her love for learning into impactful teaching practices in diverse environments. Currently, she serves as a High School Social Studies Teacher at the renowned Singapore American School, where she believes in fostering learning experiences that are relevant, real, and enjoyable. Mare's dedication lies in shaping her students into competent global citizens who can think critically, demonstrate respect, care for others, and actively engage in their communities.
Throughout her career, Mare has embraced a multitude of roles that have enriched her pedagogical approach. Before her tenure at Singapore American School, she was an MYP Humanities Teacher at the prestigious Chadwick International School. Her journey in education has also included being a World Geography Teacher at the International School of the Americas and teaching 6th Grade Pre-AP World Cultures & Geography at STEM Academy. In each of these positions, she has focused on creating authentic learning opportunities through experiential learning, interdisciplinary learning, service-learning, and problem-based learning.
In addition to her teaching positions, Mare has a rich history of contributing to various environmental and educational initiatives. Her experience as an Environmental Health/Safety/Training Officer with the U.S. Coast Guard laid the groundwork for her commitment to environmental education. She has also served as a Foreign Vessel Inspector and an Environmental Outreach Coordinator, where she further honed her skills in communication and community engagement.
Mare's background as a River Guide with Blackwater Expeditions and her role as Recreation Director at the Litchfield Beach and Golf Resort showcase her versatility and ability to connect with learners outside traditional classroom settings. Furthermore, she has served as an Interpretive Naturalist with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and fulfilled multiple roles in environmental education and outreach as part of AmeriCorps and the Clean Water Fund of North Carolina, reinforcing her commitment to environmental stewardship and education.

Mare Stewart's academic journey reflects her dedication to both interdisciplinary learning and environmental studies. She earned her Master of Arts (M.A.) in Interdisciplinary Studies from Lesley University, a program that empowered her to integrate various fields of study into her teaching methods. Prior to this, she obtained her Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Environmental Studies from Warren Wilson College, where she developed a strong foundation in the principles of environmental science and its societal connections.
