Mara Mills
Associate Professor at New York University
Mara Mills is an Associate Professor of Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University.12 She is also the Ph.D. Director in her department and co-founder and Director of the NYU Center for Disability Studies.2 Mills holds B.A. degrees in Biology and Literature from the University of California, Santa Cruz, an M.A. in Biology, and a Ph.D. in History of Science from Harvard University.12
Her research focuses on disability studies, Science and Technology Studies, and sound studies.2 Mills has authored or co-authored over 80 articles, chapters, and reviews, and her work has received several awards, including the IEEE History Prize and the Walter Benjamin Award.2 She has co-edited several books, including "Crip Authorship: Disability as Method" and "Testing Hearing: The Making of Modern Aurality".12
Mills is a founding editor of the journal Catalyst: Feminism, Theory, Technoscience and has served on the executive council of the Society for the History of Technology.23 Her research has been funded by various organizations, including the National Science Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities.2
At NYU, she teaches courses on STS, the history of technology, and disability studies, including a popular undergraduate course called "Disability, Technology, and Media".2 Mills has received numerous teaching awards at NYU, including the University Distinguished Teaching Award.2
