Maikiko James
Director of Programs at Women In Film
Maikiko James is the Senior Director of Programs at Women In Film (WIF), a position she has held for over 10 years.5 In this role, she oversees various programs including the WIF/Black List Episodic and Feature Labs, the Financing Strategy Intensive with Sundance Institute, and the Fellowship Program.14
Prior to her work at WIF, Maikiko produced impact campaigns with Active Voice, working on projects such as "Food Inc.," "Welcome to Shelbyville," "Gideon's Army," and "Kids for Cash".14 She also served as a Special Project Advisor on the WIF-supported documentary "Seeking Asian Female".1
Maikiko is actively involved in social justice initiatives. She is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) - Los Angeles chapter, serving on the DSA National Abolition Working Group and Multiracial Organizing steering committees.23 In 2021, she was nominated as an inaugural Margaret Burroughs Community Fellow in the Social Justice Initiative at the University of Illinois Chicago's Portal Project.2
Maikiko holds a BFA in Dramatic Writing from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.4 She is also a trained improviser, having studied at Upright Citizens Brigade and Groundlings, and performs regularly in Los Angeles.4
In addition to her work in film and social justice, Maikiko has experience in various fields including youth leadership, immigration justice, juvenile justice system reform, media representation and equity, and feminist anti-militarism.2
