    Mackenzie Cooley

    Mackenzie Cooley is a historian specializing in the history of ideas in Renaissance Italy and the Spanish Empire, focusing on the role of practice and experience in shaping theories about nature.

    She explores the intersections of history with science, delving into genetics and bioarchaeological evidence as new sources for historical research.

    Her current book project, The Perfection of Nature: Animals, Humans, and the Invention of Race, examines animal breeding, inheritance, and race within the context of utopian trends in Renaissance thought.

    Cooley founded the Natural Things - Ad Fontes Naturae research group, dedicated to global natural history studies, and has received support from prestigious institutions like the Max Planck Institute, Fulbright Foundation, and Renaissance Society of America.

    With a doctorate and master's degree from Stanford University in early modern history and history of science, her dissertation earned the 2019 Cappadocia Prize for Best Unpublished Manuscript from the Society of Italian Historical Studies.

    She served as a Cornell University Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow, following her academic journey that began with a double major in History and Comparative Literature at Cornell University.
