Lucy Kiama
Country Director at HIAS Refugee Trust of Kenya
Lucy Kiama is a prominent figure in the humanitarian sector, currently serving as the Country Director for HIAS Refugee Trust of Kenya. She has been in this role since September 2015, where she has provided visionary leadership and strategic management for HIAS operations in Kenya, focusing on programs such as Community-Based Protection, Durable Solutions, and Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) for urban refugees, particularly those with specific vulnerabilities like survivors of gender-based violence and unaccompanied minors.13
Before her tenure at HIAS, Lucy was the Executive Director of the Refugee Consortium of Kenya from November 2009 to September 2015. In this capacity, she led various programs including legal aid, psychosocial support, and advocacy initiatives aimed at improving the legal framework for refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Kenya.13 Her efforts contributed significantly to legislative reforms, including the draft refugee bill in 2015.
Lucy Kiama holds a degree from the University of Nairobi and has extensive experience in resource mobilization and partnership building within the non-profit sector. Her work has involved collaboration with multiple stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organizations, and international donors.12
In her current role as Deputy Regional Director for Africa and Eurasia, she continues to expand HIAS's impact across various countries by enhancing programs that address mental health, economic inclusion, and legal protection for forcibly displaced populations.14
