    Lilia Xie

Postdoctoral Scholar at University of California, Berkeley

Lilia Xie is a materials chemist and Assistant Professor at Princeton University.2567 She was previously a postdoctoral researcher at UC Berkeley in Kwabena Bediako’s lab and a Berkeley Lab affiliate at the Advanced Light Source (ALS).134 She is interested in inorganic and supramolecular materials with emergent properties.7

Xie's research focuses on two-dimensional materials with electronic and magnetic properties that could lead to more efficient information processing and storage technologies.1 Her team introduces elements such as iron or chromium into the spaces between layers of materials, creating materials with fascinating magnetic properties.1 For example, with chromium-containing materials, the electrons in separate layers align in different directions, and the number of spirals can be changed by applying a magnetic field and read out by measuring the conductivity.1

Xie was named a 2021 L'Oréal USA For Women in Science Fellow.14 She is also a recipient of the 2021 Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellowship.34 Xie was a postdoctoral fellow at UC Berkeley from July 2020 to December 2024.6 She came to UC Berkeley from MIT, where she was a member of Professor Mircea Dincă’s research lab.4 While at MIT, Xie worked on electrically conductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) research, synthesizing new conductive frameworks and studying how certain structural motifs dictate their transport properties.4
