Liam Drumgoole

Liam Drumgoole is the Officer-in-Charge of the Security & Safety Service at the United Nations Office Geneva (UNOG).13 He has held this position since April 2021, after joining the Service in May 2017 as the Deputy Chief of Service.1

Background and Education

Drumgoole holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Sociology from the National University of Ireland and a Master's degree in Security & Risk Management from the University of Leicester, UK.1 He has also completed postgraduate studies in the Psychology of Leadership at Cornell University.1

Career History

Military Service:: Before joining the United Nations, Drumgoole served for 23 years in the Irish Defence Forces as a Commissioned Officer.1 During this time, he held senior Command & Staff appointments both domestically and in three separate United Nations Peacekeeping missions.1

United Nations Career:: Drumgoole joined the United Nations in 2012 and has held several positions within the UN Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS):

2. Security Coordination Officer at the Division of Security & Safety Services (2015-2017)
3. Training & Development Section coordinator (2017)
4. Deputy Chief of Security & Safety Service at UNOG (May 2017-April 2021)

Expertise and Responsibilities

Drumgoole has extensive experience in senior management within the security sector, with a particular focus on the United Nations system.3 In his current role, he is responsible for overseeing the security and safety operations at the United Nations Office in Geneva, one of the busiest conference centers in the world.12
