    Lewis Kay

    Professor at University of Toronto

Lewis Kay is a distinguished Professor of Molecular Genetics, Biochemistry, and Chemistry at the University of Toronto and a Senior Scientist at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.12 He is renowned for his groundbreaking work in biomolecular nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, focusing on the study of protein structure, dynamics, and function.3

Kay received his B.Sc. in Biochemistry from the University of Alberta in 1983 and his Ph.D. in Biophysics from Yale University in 1988.14 He joined the University of Toronto as an Assistant Professor in 1992 and was promoted to Full Professor just three years later.1

His research has significantly contributed to the understanding of protein dynamics and their role in health and disease.3 Kay has developed innovative NMR methods to study large proteins and their complexes, as well as to explore sparsely populated, transiently formed conformations of proteins implicated in various diseases.12

Professor Kay has published 490 research papers, and his laboratory's tools are widely used worldwide.1 He is a Fellow of both the Royal Society of London and the Royal Society of Canada, and an international member of the National Academy of Sciences.14 In 2017, he was inducted as an Officer of the Order of Canada and received the Gairdner Foundation International Award.4

Most recently, in 2025, Kay was honored with the Alexander Hollaender Award in Biophysics by the National Academy of Sciences for his pioneering work in biochemistry and NMR spectroscopy.5
