Lauren Barghout
Visiting Scholar at BISC, EECS at UC Berkeley
Dr. Lauren Barghout is a distinguished scientist, inventor, and serial entrepreneur with a robust academic background.
She holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Vision Science from the University of California at Berkeley and a Bachelors degree in Physics from Hampshire College.
Lauren's groundbreaking work includes the invention of a Gestalt-based fuzzy-logic image segmentation and labeling technique, widely used in commercial image/video background removal, object recognition, and image labeling systems.
Her research focuses on context-dependent spatial vision, spatial masking, theoretical and computational psychophysics, and the application of fuzzy set theory to human and machine vision.
Currently a visiting scholar at the prestigious Berkeley Initiative for Soft Computing in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science department at U.C. Berkeley, Lauren is actively involved in cutting-edge research.
Adding to her impressive portfolio, she has held key positions such as Chief Executive Officer and Chief Science Officer at Paravue Corporation, Senior Research Scientist at MetaMed Research, Inc., CEO and co-founder at Eyegorithm, Scientist, Founder, and CEO at BurningEyedeas, Principal at LB Consulting, and Computational Psychophysics at The Smith Kettlewell Eye Research Institute.
Dr. Barghout's vast experience and expertise have culminated in her current project - writing a book for O'Reilly Media titled "Essential Computer Vision: Fuzzy, Bayesian techniques, and Deep Learning".
