Kirk Hovell
I make spacecraft do things they couldn't do before
Kirk Hovell is a notable figure in the aerospace sector, serving as the Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Obruta Space Solutions, a company focused on developing technology for spacecraft docking and satellite servicing. Based in Ottawa, Canada, Hovell has been with Obruta since its inception in July 2019. His work involves leading the technical development of a docking kit designed to facilitate spacecraft interactions, which is critical for sustainable space operations. The company has also secured funding from the Canadian Space Agency to create a simulator for space debris capture.12
Hovell recently completed his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Aerospace Engineering at Carleton University, where he specialized in using deep reinforcement learning to enhance the autonomy of spacecraft and quadrotors. His doctoral research was titled "Deep Reinforcement Learning as Guidance for Aerospace Robotics," and he defended his thesis successfully in January 2022.13 Before his PhD, he earned both a Master's and Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering from the same institution, focusing on space systems design and spacecraft laboratory development.1
In addition to his academic achievements, Hovell has experience as a Teaching Assistant at Carleton University and has worked on various research projects, including developing an icing detection probe for aircraft with the National Research Council Canada.1 Outside of his professional life, he enjoys activities such as canoeing and has a fondness for cats.1
