Given John’s poignant post below, sharing our own story. In 2016, our garage burned down with a lot of our house stuff in it given we were trying to sell our small house and wanted it to look bigger. It was terrifying and then turned to emotionally devastating when Jen realized her mom’s one photo album of all their childhood pictures was in a tub in the garage. Her mom had passed away a year earlier. The garage was completely burned out. It was a hopeless moment.
We rushed into the garage that still had steam and foam everywhere.
In a moment I’ll never forget, we implausibly discovered her mom’s photo album charred but nearly perfectly preserved amidst a molten pile of plastic tubs that had melted around the album.
In a total loss of everything, one item was saved: her deceased mom’s one photo album.
We were far more fortunate than anyone in these tragic LA fires, but it was a visceral experience to realize that was really the only physical thing we cared about being saved.
And somehow, it was.
California leadership, at nearly every turn, continues to devastate their state and people, all with smug moral superiority. The consequences are both immediate and long term. Hopefully the populace stops voting for people who embrace destroying one of the most beautiful parts of the world.
