Browning the Green Space (BGS) is a voluntary coalition of leaders and organizations, primarily in the New England region. Our shared passion is to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in clean energy. Our mission is to increase the participation and leadership of people from underrepresented groups, including people of color and women in the clean energy space and beyond.

The organization has five focus areas or pillars:
 • Careers - provide a pipeline and pathways to employment in clean energy for students and others in underrepresented groups
 • Companies - help employers embrace, incorporate, and achieve DEI goals in their recruitment, hiring, and retention activities and remove any unconscious barriers or obstacles to equitable employment
 • Capital - enable entrepreneurs in underrepresented groups to gain access to resources, including technical assistance, networks, customers, and capital
 • Contracts - increase representation of underrepresented groups as contractors for energy efficiency and clean energy by facilitating access to capital, bonding, insurance, etc.
 • Communities - increase the adoption of energy efficiency and renewable energy products and service in communities of color and/or low-income communities by increasing awareness and advocating to remove structural disincentives

The Majira Project is a pro-bono business accelerator whose mission is "Community Development through Entrepreneurship''. Our focus has always been on supporting startups and small businesses, especially those led by founders of color and/or serving underserved communities. The word "Majira'' means summer in Swahili, and just like the growing season, we help startups and small businesses grow. As seeds and seedlings need sunlight, water, nutrients, and space to develop, startups and small businesses require consulting, coaching, connections, and capital. Majira's vision is to support entrepreneurs and create jobs and wealth in communities.

Provided general support, guidance, and perspectives on environmental justice as well as specific support on four case studies of regions in the United States: Southwestern Pennsylvania, the Industrial Heartland, the Gulf Coast (Louisiana and Southeast Texas), and New Mexico - regions with highly variant economic realities that are all positioned to be impacted by the transition to deep decarbonization.

Environmental Justice Visiting Scholar 

I had the pleasure of working with four amazing Social Innovators from the Urban Farming Institute (UFI), Vital Village Network (VVN), Mattapan Food & Fitness Coalition (MFFC), and Lowell Parks & Conservation Trust (LP&CT) before, during, and after the pandemic. I would come in December with other consultants to support the new cohort of Social Innovators through the first phase of the Social Innovation Forum's (SIF's) nonprofit accelerator. After being matched with a Social Innovator organization, I would work closely with the organization's leader to develop a two-year plan for growth, create a four-page investment prospectus, and craft a five-minute pitch to be delivered at the May Social Innovator Showcase.

• Worked with MassDEP's bureaus, offices, and regions to coordinate and expand the outreach and technical assistance of the Agency.
• Served as a member of the Massachusetts Food Policy Council, as Governor Baker and Secretary Beaton completed the first food system plan since 1974.
• Represented the commissioner and the department on the Brownfields Advisory Group, the Metropolitan Area Planning Council Executive Committee, and the Climate Change Adaptation Sub-Committee.

MassDEP

Associate Commissioner

• Coordinated the Commonwealth's Brownfields Program and provided broad oversight of MassDEP’s Environmental Justice (EJ) Strategies.  
• Led the Brownfield Support Team (BST) Initiative that brought together state agencies in a collaborative effort working with municipal, regional, federal, and other partners (i.e., private sector and non-profit entities) to assess, cleanup, and redevelop contaminated and underutilized properties in an effort to remove blight, create jobs, and increase tax revenues.  The BST Initiative led to monthly coordination of 34 state, local, regional, and federal agencies, resulting in streamlined, accelerated progress in achieving project milestones; a commitment of more than $50 million in funding by BST partner agencies for assessment, cleanup and demolition; and resolution of multiple technical and legal issues that had served as roadblocks to redevelopment of the 492 acres of property spanning more than a dozen complex sites.
• Served as the department's lead contact on EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy's Making A Visible Difference in Communities Initiative in Lawrence, MA.
• Aided in Governor Patrick’s signing of the Commonwealth’s first ever EJ Executive Order by facilitating listening sessions with community partners, benchmarking initiatives in other states, and creating MassDEP's internal EJ Team to share lessons learned and assist with development and review of draft documents.

Director of Brownfields and Environmental Justice

•Reported to the deputy commissioner for operations and environmental compliance on operations issues related to the department.
•Worked with MassDEP's bureaus, offices, and regions to streamline permitting; coordinate and expand the outreach and technical assistance of the Agency; and further enhance emergency response efforts with a focus on special projects and the privilege to serve as the public liaison for MassDEP’s programs that were funded by President Obama’s 2009 Economic Stimulus Package (i.e., the 2009 American Recovery & Reinvestment Act).  
• Coordinated the Commissioner's Summer Speaker Series and represented the commissioner and the department on the Brownfields Advisory Group, the Metropolitan Area Planning Council Executive Committee, MA Food Policy Council, and the Climate Change Adaptation Sub-Committee.

Focused on permitting issues; was the clean energy and environment liaison for Governor Patrick’s performance metrics initiative; helped create the Commonwealth Energy Resource Team; and coordinated the Secretariat’s emergency support functions.
