    Keith Claybrook

    Assistant Professor of Africana Studies at CSU, Long Beach

    M. Keith Claybrook Jr., Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Africana Studies at CSU, Long Beach, where he teaches courses on Black History, Research Methods, and Critical Thinking.12 He also teaches classes on history and the social sciences.235 Claybrook is also an advisor for the Black Student Union and the Black Business Student Association.13

    Claybrook earned a B.A. in African American Studies and a B.A. in History from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, CA.4 He also holds an M.A. in General Education with a concentration in Intercultural Education from Loyola Marymount University, and a Ph.D. in Cultural Studies with an Africana Studies Certificate from Claremont Graduate University.4

    Claybrook serves on CSU, Long Beach’s Presidents Equity and Change Commission and served two terms as Vice President of the Black Faculty and Staff Association.123 He regularly attends conferences such as the National Conference of Black Studies, the African Heritage Studies Association, and the Sixth Region Diaspora Caucus conference, where he has presented on topics including Black student activism, the Black Students Movement, Black Los Angeles, educational history, African Deep Thought and critical thinking, identity and consciousness, reparations, Hip Hop, and pedagogy.123

    Claybrook is the author of Building the Basics: A Handbook for Pursuing Academic Excellence in Africana Studies, which offers suggestions for studying, critical thinking, reading, scholarly writing, and group work.123 He is a lifetime member and regular contributor to Black Perspectives, the blog of the African American Intellectual History Society.13 Claybrook has also published in the International Journal of Africana Studies, the Journal of Black Studies, the Journal of African American Studies, and Africology: The International Journal of Pan African Studies.1 He has lent his expertise on “Today in L.A.” on NBC4, KJLH’s “Front Page with Dominque DePrima,” KPCC- NPR on “AirTalk with Larry Mantle,” and other media outlets and community programs.123
