Kate Patterson
3D Molecular Animation and virtual reality
Kate Patterson is a visual science communicator specializing in creating 3D molecular animations and immersive visualization experiences to enhance public engagement with research at Garvan Institute of Medical Research.
With a background in veterinary practice and a PhD in cancer biology and signal transduction from UNSW, Kate transitioned into science communication and illustration, focusing on cancer and epigenetics.
Her work involves crafting animations using authentic scientific data, merging storytelling with art and design tools. She is currently dedicated to developing multimedia animations and visual experiences for Garvan's Cell Observatory, utilizing immersive technologies such as virtual reality.
Kate's research pursuits encompass utilizing animation and visualization in educational settings, employing practice-led and reflective practice methods to investigate scientific visualization and biomedical animation.
She serves as a Lab Research Fellow at UNSW Art and Design's 3D Visualization and Aesthetics Laboratory and holds the position of Conjoint Senior Lecturer at UNSW Sydney.
Previously, Kate has held roles at various organizations including Garvan Institute of Medical Research, MediPics and Prose, National Breast Cancer Foundation, and Allambie Veterinary Clinic.
