Nakai started his career at Sony, where he developed Compact Discs, CDMA, car navigation and AI. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Applied Physics from the University of Tokyo, and a Master's and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Nakai was also President & CEO at At-Wireless Inc., CEO & President at IPFlex Inc., and CEO Japan at VLSI Technology Inc. He served as a Venture Partner at Innovation Engine Inc., and as Vice President of Marketing at Northern Telecom Japan. At SONY Corporation, he was a Manager of Information Systems lab.
