worked as part of the energy systems team at Sharp Laboratories of Europe
Managed collaboration with external partners on the IUK funded project - Upside Energy. 
Design and implementation of control strategies and algorithms for energy storage systems. 
Plan and execute testing strategy from unit tests to integration and soak testing.

Software development:
System integration of hardware and networking devices (RS485/232, CAN, LAN, WiFi, Modbus) 
Linux - Deploying applications on embedded linux platform (Beaglebone Black, Puppet).
Python - Application development and data analysis inc. numpy, pandas & matplotlib
TDD (pytest), documentation (sphinx), versioning (git), CI (Jenkins)
Cloud computing: Manage CI pipeline on AWS production servers

H&S:
Authorised Person electrical. Issue permit to work, sanction to test, rig inspection reports for all potentially hazardous electrical installations in the laboratory.
First Aider.
Lab-wide H&S committee rep for the energy team. 
Researcher in charge of power electronics laboratory and mechanical workshop.

Senior Research Scientist

This role involved the design, build and operation of test systems for prototype energy storage devices along with developing new ideas and projects in the scope of power electronics, renewable energy, smart grids and demand side response.

Took hardware and software product from PoC to prototype device.

Role included:
C programming on Ti micro-controllers and arduino devices.
Python development on embedded Linux systems.
Mains level electrical safety training.
Direct responsibility for lab space.
Work on one of a kind projects such as mounting energy storage systems on large vehicles in Spain.
Design and construction of fully automated test rigs using micro-controllers and the lab view software package for system control and data acquisition.
Project planning for Innovate UK funded energy storage projects.
Engaging external companies in collaborative work in the smart grid & aggregated demand side response sectors.

Research scientist

Graduate researcher at Sharp Laboratories of Europe. The Graduate program consists of a series of 2 month projects.

Health and energy technology group: Developed novel materials and processes for energy storage applications.

Advanced optoelectronics group: Worked on development of a solid state UV laser system. Work involved developing and assessing beam cleanup optics and developing a novel cavity design for high power applications. Have published results from this work in the 100th anniversary edition of the Sharp Technical Journal. 

Solar group: Developed new process flow for high efficiency solar cell fabrication. Included collaborative work with Southampton University

Optical imaging and display systems: Research and development towards novel optics systems for use in robotics. Prototype system was successfully built and demonstrated

European Design Center: Developed customer and sales support software tools for Sharps latest LED product range

Graduate rotations were cut short in November 2012 to accept an internal vacancy on a power-electronics based energy storage project. This role includes design, build and operation of test systems for prototype energy storage devices as part of a TSB funded project.

Graduate Researcher

Obtained a first class degree overall in in the highly selective "Master of Physics with a year in research" . The final year  was solely spent working in the Laboratory for Hybrid Optoelectronics developing a method for rapidly measuring the power dependant emission of organic microcavities.
