Renowned Spanish Composer and Pianist
José Zárate is a prominent composer, pianist, and academic, currently serving as an academic at the Real Academia Conquense de Artes y Letras since October 2021. He holds a Doctorate in Musicology from the University of Oviedo, making him the first European to achieve this distinction in a Spanish university. Born in Madrid in 1972, Zárate is recognized as one of the most significant contemporary composers in Spanish music.
His extensive body of work includes compositions for symphonic orchestra, string orchestra, chamber music, and choral pieces. Zárate has also produced numerous piano compositions, which have been performed globally. His discography features an upcoming CD titled "Orchestral Works," which includes his "Viola Concerto" released in 2017 under Sony Classical. His music has been recorded by Spanish National Radio (RNE), and he has participated in various international music competitions as a performer.1
In addition to his compositional work, Zárate has held teaching positions, including as an assistant professor at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, where he taught music education courses. He has also been involved in the Spanish music community through roles in organizations like SGAE (Sociedad General de Autores y Editores) and has contributed to numerous academic projects and publications related to musicology.1
