Urban Farm Owner and Producer
Joni Albers is the Owner and Producer of The Hungry Gardens, an urban farm located in Sun Valley, California. Her journey into urban farming began in January 2020, initially focusing on heirloom tomato seedlings for farmers' markets. This venture rapidly expanded due to increased demand during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading her to establish a half-acre urban farm that specializes in growing unique, historically significant vegetables using organic and biodynamic methods.13
Background and Education
Albers grew up in rural Kansas, where her early experiences with agriculture, particularly influenced by her dairy-farming grandparents and participation in 4-H, shaped her passion for horticulture. She pursued her education at the Art Institute of Colorado, which further equipped her for her current role.23
The Hungry Gardens
Founded in 2019, The Hungry Gardens aims to provide fresh, nutrient-dense produce to the local community while also offering educational opportunities related to gardening and sustainable practices. The farm collaborates with local organizations, including the Villa Scalabrini Retirement Center, to enhance community engagement and support.14
Albers's vision emphasizes sustainability and community involvement, encapsulated in her motto: “Giving by Growing”. Through The Hungry Gardens, she seeks to foster a deeper connection between people and their food sources while addressing broader issues like climate change.13
