Jonathan Stock
Director, USGS Innovation Center for Earth Sciences
Jonathan Stock is a research geologist and the Director of the USGS National Innovation Center (NIC). His work focuses on identifying and addressing national scientific problems by collaborating with technology partners to develop innovative solutions. The NIC aims to tackle challenges related to environmental pollution, sea level rise, earthquakes, landslides, and other geologic hazards through the design and implementation of new tools and technologies.13
In his role as a research scientist, Stock employs mapping, real-time monitoring, and modeling techniques to study the impact of climate and land use changes on geological hazards and landscape evolution. He has conducted significant research on ancient mountain ranges, landscape evolution laws, and the processes that shape Earth's steep valleys through debris flows. Currently, he is involved in projects related to real-time monitoring of landslides in California, forecasting geologic hazards from storms, and studying the effects of land use on military training areas and coral reef pollution in the Pacific.1
Stock also engages in discussions about the integration of new technologies like quantum sensors for subsurface exploration and has been involved in workshops focused on off-world resource detection.24 He collaborates with institutions such as Carnegie Mellon University, NASA Ames, UC Santa Cruz, and others to advance these initiatives.13
