Jon Oringer is an American entrepreneur, programmer, and photographer, best known as the founder and Executive Chairman of Shutterstock, a leading stock media company. Born on May 2, 1974, he began his career in the 1990s by developing one of the first pop-up blockers and subsequently founded several startups focused on various software solutions.
In 2003, Oringer launched Shutterstock to provide affordable microstock photography, initially using his own photographs to build the platform. This innovative approach allowed him to pioneer a subscription-based model in the stock photo industry. Shutterstock went public in 2012, and by 2013, Oringer was recognized as New York's first tech billionaire following the company's successful IPO. As of 2016, Shutterstock boasted over 100,000 contributors and an active customer base of 1.4 million across 150 countries.13
Oringer holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from Stony Brook University and a Master's degree in Computer Science from Columbia University. He has been acknowledged with numerous awards, including being named Ernst & Young's Technology Entrepreneur of the Year in 2012 and featured in Crain's New York 40 Under 40 list.125
In April 2020, Oringer transitioned from CEO to Executive Chairman of Shutterstock, continuing to influence the company's strategic direction. He is also a certified commercial helicopter pilot and has made significant investments in real estate, including a notable $42 million purchase of a mansion in Miami Beach.46
