Dr. John W M Cheng boasts a distinguished career with over 25 years of experience in energy systems and low-carbon technology development and deployment. His expertise encompasses a wide array of domains including smart grids, climate adaptation, hydrogen economy, carbon capture and sequestration, renewable energy, and end-use technologies.
Throughout his career, Dr. Cheng has been actively involved in research and has made significant contributions to the field, with frequent publications in peer-reviewed journals and international conferences focusing on clean-tech developments, smart grids, and load signature analysis and applications.
Dr. Cheng held a senior role at the CLP Research Institute (CLP-RI) for over a decade from 2004 to 2017 and later transitioned to the position of Senior Manager of Group Sustainability at CLP until his retirement in 2017.
Prior to his time at CLP in Hong Kong, he occupied various senior positions at prominent Canadian companies and institutions like Canadian National Railway, Department of National Defense, and CAE. His diverse engineering and management experiences cover areas such as railway safety, signal and control systems, military equipment testing, and the development of large-scale Energy Management Systems (EMS) for major utilities.
Dr. Cheng holds a strong educational background with a B.Eng from the University of Saskatchewan, an M.Eng, and a Ph.D. from McGill University in Canada. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Ontario and a valued member of associations such as IEEE, HKIE, and CIGRE. Notably, he served as the secretary of the World Energy Council – Hong Kong from 2010 to 2017.
Currently, Dr. Cheng serves as a Director at JIAM Consulting, where his wealth of experience and knowledge continues to drive advancements in the energy sector.
