John Thwaites

Prof. John Thwaites is a global expert in sustainable development, water, and climate change policies, known for his work in academia, government, and industry.

Previously serving as Deputy Premier of Victoria, Prof. Thwaites held key ministerial positions focusing on health, planning, environment, water, and climate change.

His tenure in politics was marked by significant reforms in water conservation, energy efficiency standards, and climate change initiatives in Victoria.

Currently, he is a distinguished professor at Monash University and chairs the Monash Sustainable Development Institute, spearheading research efforts on climate change and sustainable development.

Prof. Thwaites plays a pivotal role as the Chair of ClimateWorks Australia, guiding the transition towards net zero emissions by 2050, and also leads Melbourne Water, overseeing water management and environmental health.

He further contributes to sustainable development as the Chair of the National Sustainable Development Council and serves on the board of Fairtrade Australia New Zealand.
