John Stavig
John Stavig is the Managing Director of the Gary S. Holmes Center for Entrepreneurship at the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota.23 He has held this position since 2005.12 His work at the Holmes Center has been extremely valuable for the University of Minnesota's Entrepreneurship program.2 The mission of the Holmes Center is to inspire, educate, and connect the next generation of entrepreneurs.4 In his role, Stavig leads the development and delivery of experiential curriculum and programs.1 He leads fundraising, develops outreach programs, and implements new curriculum for undergraduate and MBA courses.4 Additionally, he teaches experiential courses in entrepreneurship and advises students and alumni on new ventures.4
Before his role at the University of Minnesota, Stavig's background was in management consulting and private equity within the communications industry.4 He was a CFO and board member at Verizon Avenue (formerly OnePoint Communications) from 1998 to 2002.2 He also served as Vice President and Founding Principal at VenCom Group, Inc. from 1995 to 2000 and as a Principal at Gemini Consulting/MAC Group from 1992 to 1995.2 Earlier in his career, he was a Senior Consultant at Arthur Andersen from 1990 to 1992.2 As a founding principal of a $100 million private equity fund, he sourced investments and took leadership positions in startups focused on online advertising and bundled communications services.14
Stavig holds a BS in Business from the Carlson School of the University of Minnesota (1986) and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania (1991).1
He has received several honors and awards, including being selected for the National Review Panel by the National Science Foundation in 2014, receiving the Excellence & Innovation Award from the Carlson School of Management in 2013, being named one of the Real Power 50 by Minnesota Business Magazine in 2014, and receiving the Titan of Technology Award from the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal in 2015.2
