John Fernandez is a seasoned executive with a robust background in innovation and strategic partnerships. Currently, he serves as the Senior Vice President of Innovation & Strategic Partnerships at The Mill in Bloomington, Indiana, where he leads the development of The Trades District, a key project in the area’s certified tech park.
Prior to his role at The Mill, Fernandez held significant positions, including Global Chief Innovation Officer at Dentons, where he was instrumental in shaping the firm's innovation agenda and overseeing a large team dedicated to client solutions and product development. He also served as the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development under President Obama, where he was confirmed by the Senate to lead the Economic Development Administration.
Fernandez has a strong educational background, holding degrees from Indiana University, including a Bachelor’s and a Master’s in Public Affairs, as well as a Juris Doctor from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law. His leadership experience extends to his tenure as the Mayor of Bloomington, where he implemented significant fiscal policies and community initiatives that fostered economic growth and job creation.
