Artist & Designer
Johanna Friedman is a Swedish textile artist, designer, and educator currently based in San Francisco, California. Born in 1982 in Lund, Sweden, she holds a Bachelor's degree in textile art from Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm and a Master of Fine Arts from California College of the Arts in San Francisco.12
Friedman's artistic work focuses on textile-based sculptures and two-dimensional pieces, often characterized by elements of repetition and a tension between organized patterns and chaotic clutter. Her pieces have been exhibited in various art galleries and museums worldwide, including notable venues such as Hordaland Kunstsenter in Norway and the Swedish Embassy in Washington, D.C..12 Additionally, she has contributed to public art projects, such as a commissioned wall piece for a school in Gothenburg, Sweden.1
In her practice, Friedman explores the duality of textiles as both two-dimensional surfaces and three-dimensional objects, often translating photographs into textile forms to evoke complex visual experiences. Her work reflects a balance between meticulous planning and the organic growth of her pieces, incorporating humor and deeper thematic explorations of reality and perception.12
