Lead Engineer, Aggregation

Primarily responsible for the Open Source team, working with the community and internal stakeholders to make recommendations on how to improve the process of contributing and participating in the project. Provided leadership and support to the Platform team, composed of  four principal level engineers focused on significant, cross-cutting projects, for 16 months, as well as the Documentation team, comprised of four principal-level technical writers, for 10 months.

Led all three teams through transition from quarterly goal setting process to use of OKR (Objective & Key Results) framework

Defined the role of the open source team and project at edX, identified and analyzed opportunities for lines of business related to the open source project and created a business plan for the CTO and COO based on the result of that analysis that is currently being implemented with a $1M revenue target for FY18

Delivered four open source releases, which are critical to enabling further adoption of the platform

Organized and executed three Open edX community conferences, leading the core organizing team of four, separate from the Open Source team, growing attendance from 160 to over 300 attendees, while maintaining full financial sustainability through sponsorships

Supported cross-team effort to move to Docker developer environments from small experiment to wider pilot both internally and with the community

Supported Platform team through critical upgrade of Django to the next long-term support release before
EOL, which was delivered on time and with minimal disruption

Engineering Manager, Open Source

Manage engineering team responsible for all infrastructure, including physical hardware, cloud services and core backend software for Blue State Digital's web hosting, software as a service product and high-volume email delivery services. Lead team in development and support of an HAProxy, Apache, PHP and MySQL web stack, utilizing RabbitMQ, ElasticSearch, and Cassandra to provide decoupled, data-centric services, Ruby, Python and Go for automation/tooling, and Chef and Docker for configuration management, spanning physical, Google Compute Engine and Amazon Web Services data centers.

Planned, led and executed migration of entire stack from a single data center to Amazon Web Services, utilizing multiple zones and implementing patterns to increase reliability and availability, in particular the migration of MySQL databases from single SAN-backed instances to multi-node clusters running on Amazon Web Services with hot standbys, enabling fast failover for improved availability.

Implemented new monitoring and alerting tools and policies to increase effectiveness, consistency and granularity of alerts and reduce on-call pager load.

Prioritized self-service tooling and automation to allow the team to focus on more complex projects and enabling the client services team to complete common requests themselves leading to quicker turnaround times for client requests.

Worked with the executive team to design and implement a quarterly roadmap prioritization process, balancing competing objectives of cost reduction, reliability improvements, and supporting planned features and products.

Diagnosed and resolved critical performance issues identified during development including reducing peak memory usage by reducing unnecessary references held in the session and improving response time through SQL query consolidation and lazy loading strategies.

Contributed to all levels of development of the application, including the workflow engine, asynchronous trade engine interface and persistence layer, leveraging both proprietary Nexaweb technologies as well as Spring and iBatis.
