Joana Westphal

Joana Westphal is currently the Head of Transnational Education (TNE) at Universities UK International (UUKi).1 She works within UUKi's Policy and Engagement Team, leading the TNE programme to support universities in building sustainable, scalable partnerships across the globe.1 Westphal has experience in various areas of international higher education, including recruitment, research, and TNE, with a particular focus on the Middle East and North Africa region.1

In her role, Westphal is involved in analyzing and reporting on UK transnational education. She has contributed to reports such as 'The scale of UK higher education transnational education 2020-21' and the upcoming 2023 'Scale of TNE' report.12 Her work involves supporting UK higher education providers in their TNE efforts, with 162 providers reporting 558,215 students learning through TNE in 228 countries and territories in 2021-22.2

Westphal's expertise extends to policy matters related to TNE, particularly in the context of the UK's departure from the EU and its impact on European students' access to UK education.1 She is also involved in discussions about TNE data requirements and their implications for the sector.3
