Jim Hawley

Jim Hawley is the Director for State and External Relations at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab).12 As a Bay Area native, he manages the Lab's relationships with state governments and external partners.2

In his role, Hawley has several key responsibilities:

Government Relations

• He works to educate policymakers about the capabilities and research happening at Berkeley Lab.1
• Hawley helps align the Lab's work with federal and state government missions to deliver relevant, actionable research.1
• He participates in coalitions with industry, academic, and research institutions to convey broader messages to policymakers about the importance of research in particular areas.1

External Relations

• Hawley manages Berkeley Lab's relationships with external partners and the state government.24
• He serves as a point of contact for state-related matters, including California State hearings.4

Advocacy and Education

• He introduces policymakers to researchers at the Lab who are doing work that may be exciting, interesting, and useful for government initiatives.1
• Hawley helps ensure that governments, as principal sponsors of the Lab's research, understand the importance of the science performed at Berkeley Lab.1

Jim Hawley is part of the Government & Community Relations Office (GCR) at Berkeley Lab, which is dedicated to advancing the Lab's research, institutional, and community goals through engagement with government officials, community leaders, and the K-12 STEM education community.13
