Jim Cybulski is the co-inventor of Foldscope and the CEO and Co-founder of Foldscope Instruments, Inc.12 He developed the Foldscope, a paper-based microscope that costs less than $1 in parts, during his PhD studies at Stanford University under Manu Prakash.23
Cybulski holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Physics from Lehigh University, a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from MIT, and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University.3
Prior to Foldscope, Cybulski co-founded Axis Surgical, where he served as Chief Technology Officer, leading the development of medical devices for spine surgery and arthroscopy.3
As CEO of Foldscope Instruments, Cybulski has led the company to produce and distribute over 1 million Foldscopes in more than 150 countries.34 The Foldscope has been used for various applications, including identifying agricultural pests, cataloging biodiversity, detecting fake currency and medicine, and STEM education in refugee camps.24
Cybulski's work with Foldscope aims to make science accessible to all, embodying the philosophy of "frugal science".4 He continues to innovate, developing new generations of Foldscopes and a companion app for better imaging and specimen identification.4
