Jessica earned her Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in actinide geochemistry from the prestigious University of Notre Dame, where she developed a deep understanding of scientific principles and methodologies. In addition, she holds a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in geology from Middle Tennessee State University, marking her early commitment to the field of science and inquiry.
Jessica's educational background laid the groundwork for her successful career as a science reporter, with her work featured in prominent publications such as Chemical & Engineering News, Nature News & Comment, The Charlotte Observer, The Chicago Tribune, National Geographic News, NOVA Next, and Slate. Her recent accomplishments include defining and implementing C&EN's first organization-wide roadmap in 2017, which has been continuously refined to align team goals and activities effectively. She also developed a comprehensive product portfolio to aid newsroom leaders in decision-making regarding current and future product development.
As part of her mission to incorporate stakeholder feedback into product development, Jessica manages C&EN's product research program anchored by the C&EN Reader Lab, a group made up of nearly 400 engaged readers established in 2018. This initiative plays a critical role in informing the newsroom's strategies through surveys, discovery interviews, co-design activities, and usability testing.
Furthermore, Jessica is the architect behind the sprint workflow for C&EN's product team, ensuring streamlined prioritization of requests, managing stakeholder interactions, and identifying dependencies and challenges that need to be addressed.
