Jerry Caprio

Gerard "Jerry" Caprio, Jr. is the William Brough Professor of Economics, Emeritus, at Williams College. He has had a distinguished career in economics, particularly in the areas of financial regulation, financial crises, and economic development. Caprio served as Chair of the Center for Development Economics (CDE) from 2006 to 2021, where he significantly enhanced the curriculum and resources, enabling the center to attract talented students from underprivileged backgrounds.13

Before his tenure at Williams College, Caprio held several high-profile positions, including Director for Policy in the World Bank’s Financial Sector Vice Presidency and Head of the Financial Sector Research Group. His work has been pivotal in establishing global databases on banking crises and regulations. He has also authored and co-authored several influential books, including The Guardians of Finance and Rethinking Bank Regulation, contributing to the broader discourse on financial systems and their reforms.12

Caprio's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Williams College, followed by a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Michigan. He has also taught at various prestigious institutions, including Trinity College Dublin and George Washington University.1
