Jeremiah Thoronka is a prominent Sierra Leonean innovator, entrepreneur, and scholar, recognized for his significant contributions to renewable energy and sustainability. He is currently a Junior Associate at Renewables in Africa (RiA), where he engages in promoting clean energy solutions and raising awareness about renewable technologies across the continent.

Background and Education

Born in Freetown, Sierra Leone, Thoronka's early experiences during the civil war, particularly the reliance on harmful energy sources like firewood and charcoal, fueled his passion for developing sustainable energy solutions. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Global Challenges from the African Leadership University and holds an MSc in Sustainability, Energy, and Development from Durham University. He is also a Commonwealth Shared Scholar and has participated in the Mandela Washington Fellowship program at Arizona State University.134

Thoronka founded Optim Energy at the age of 17, which focuses on harnessing kinetic energy from pedestrian and vehicle movements to generate electricity.
