Able to attend an event and write about it within 20 minutes after attending, allowed Jena to grow as a deadline-driven reporter.

The University Star is a student-led newspaper at Texas State University- San Marcos serving more than 34,000 students.

For the two years she served at the University Star, Jena covered news. Named Senior News Reporter from September 2011 to December 2011, Jena covered everything from breaking news, event coverage, features and a year's-worth of San Marcos city council coverage. Excelling in the field of enterprise journalism, Jena's story titled, "San Marcos Family Shares Their Struggles", earned her nominations for several awards.
