Co-Founder and Former Founding CEO of Spark Therapeutics
Jeff Marrazzo is a prominent figure in the biopharmaceutical industry, known for founding and leading Spark Therapeutics into becoming the world's first fully integrated, commercial gene therapy company. Serving as the CEO and co-founder from 2013 to 2022, Jeff oversaw the development and launch of LUXTURNA®, the first FDA-approved gene therapy for a genetic disease in the United States, revolutionizing patient access to genetic medicines through innovative reimbursement models.
During his tenure at Spark, Jeff raised substantial funds, securing partnerships with industry giants like Pfizer and Novartis. His adept leadership culminated in Spark's acquisition by Roche in 2019 for $4.8 billion, delivering significant financial returns to stakeholders. By the time Jeff departed, Spark had expanded to 850 employees and was recognized as a top employer in the biopharmaceutical sector by Science magazine.
Jeff Marrazzo's influence extends beyond Spark, as he currently serves on the boards of emerging companies like Chroma Medicine and Prime Medicine. Additionally, he is actively involved in several non-profit organizations, including Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Life Science Cares, and The Rendell Center for Civics and Civic Engagement. In 2022, Jeff and his wife established the Marrazzo Family Foundation to support creative initiatives for the youth in Philadelphia.
Educationally, Jeff holds dual bachelor's degrees in systems science and engineering, as well as in economics from the University of Pennsylvania. He furthered his studies with master's degrees in business and public administration from prestigious institutions such as Wharton and Harvard University, where he developed a specialized program.
