founder
Jeff Huber is the cofounder and CEO of Chroma, an AI-native open-source embedding database (also known as a vector database) company.12 He founded Chroma in April 2022 and is currently hiring for the company.14
Prior to Chroma, Jeff was the cofounder of Standard Cyborg from 2014 to 2021, a company that enabled developers to build 3D scanning, analysis, and design into their applications.12 He also cofounded Knowit in 2011.1
Jeff has a background in machine learning, and starting Chroma was inspired by a "there has to be a better way" moment when it comes to transitioning from demo to production in AI applications.23 Under his leadership, Chroma has quickly emerged as one of the leading offerings in the vector database space.23
Jeff and his co-founder Anton were intentional about building Chroma as an open-source tool from the beginning.5 They are currently hiring for roles in platform engineering, product engineering, and search index.4
Highlights
ai is quickly become the default intermediary to working with information and therefore all information work
increasingly it will be the default - if you have to do something, your first thought will be "can AI do this -and to try"
AI will also do more and more successfully
working directly with data, writing code, writing anything - will be more artisan. the mass manufacturing of information is upon us.
i was trying to think about what this "feels" like. i dont have a great analogy yet... but working with information with AI feels like using cutlery to eat food. it's more civilized, cleaner, faster. yes - i can use my fingers to eat - but I'd rather not.
when i can use cutlery - i always prefer it when i can use ai - i always prefer it
if all information work is mediated by AI - then all information must be addressable by AI - and that's the bull case for chroma
if GDM can hire some decent designers - they will really be cooking with gas
