Janis Purins
Conductor of the University of Latvia Wind Band
Janis Purins is a highly accomplished conductor with a rich background in music education and orchestral conducting.
Having graduated from Latvia Music Academy in 1984 with a specialization in trumpet and later studying symphony orchestra conducting under the tutelage of Prof. Vasily Sinaisky, Janis has a wealth of experience in working with wind bands since 1977.
His career highlights include serving as the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the professional Wind Orchestra RIGA from 1991 to 2007, as well as founding and leading the Latvia Youth Symphonic Band since 1996, which has earned accolades and awards in various international festivals and contests across Europe.
Janis has also contributed significantly to the academic realm as an Associate Professor at Jazeps Vitols Latvia Academy of Music since 1995, where he leads the wind orchestra conducting class.
In addition to his work in Latvia, Janis has conducted bands and participated as a jury member in various competitions and festivals in countries like the USA, Sweden, Germany, Norway, Switzerland, Belgium, The Netherlands, Estonia, and Lithuania.
He is the founder of The University of Latvia Wind Band and has conducted numerous renowned soloists from around the world.
With a Master's degree in Orchestra Conducting and another in Trumpet from Jazepa Vitola Latvijas Muzikas Akademija, Janis Purins is a versatile and highly skilled conductor known for his expertise and passion in the field.
