Jane Hermsen

Jane Hermsen is the Bureau Manager for the Southeast Resource Recovery Facility (SERRF) Electric Generation at the City of Long Beach. In this role, she oversees operations related to the facility, which processes solid waste and generates electricity through mass burn technology. SERRF, operational since 1988, is notable for its ability to reduce solid waste volume significantly while producing renewable energy.12

Hermsen has a background in engineering, having served in various capacities including Mechanical Engineering Associate and Senior Mechanical Engineer prior to her current managerial position. She holds professional certifications as a Project Management Professional (PMP) and is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) since 2016. Additionally, she is a LEED Accredited Professional, indicating her expertise in sustainable building practices.45

Under her management, SERRF has faced challenges, including financial pressures and the need for significant capital improvements. Recently, Hermsen has been involved in transitioning the facility towards new sustainable practices, including a partnership with Bioenergy Devco to develop an organics recycling facility aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing Long Beach's sustainability goals.34
