James Schmeling is a seasoned professional with over 20 years of executive experience in non-profits and research centers, specializing in military and veteran education, career development, disability policy, civil rights, and related areas.

As the President and CEO of the National Defense University Foundation, James leverages his background as a U.S. Air Force veteran and a graduate of the University of Iowa College of Law to strengthen relationships between philanthropists, private sector leaders, and the National Defense University for enhancing national security and defense education.

His role involves supporting the strategic initiatives of the University such as faculty development, student success, infrastructure enhancement, library collections, academic programs, and fostering international partnerships.

James is dedicated to advancing national security through educational innovation by organizing lectures, workshops, and collaborations to facilitate intellectual exchange among current and future leaders.

His educational background includes a J.D. from the University of Iowa College of Law and a B.A. in Political Science with a Minor in International Studies from Iowa State University.

Previously, he has held key positions such as Executive Vice President at Student Veterans of America, Co-Founder and Managing Director at the Institute for Veterans and Military Families, Chief Operating Officer at the Burton Blatt Institute in Syracuse University, and other academic and military roles.
