James A. Black, commonly known as Jim Black, served as the President and CEO of Moran Shipping Agencies until his passing on July 30, 2023, at the age of 72. He had a long and distinguished career with the company, having joined in 1974 as a boarding agent and working his way up to leadership roles over nearly five decades.136
Born on June 13, 1951, in Fall River, Massachusetts, Black was the youngest of seven children. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth and moved to Houston in 1975 to spearhead Moran's expansion into Texas. Under his leadership, Moran Shipping Agencies grew to become the largest independent steamship agency in North America, with multiple offices and a significant presence in the maritime industry.234
Throughout his career, Black was known for his commitment to the well-being of his employees and his active engagement in the maritime community. He served on various boards and was recognized as the Maritime Leader of the Year in 2019 by the Greater Houston Port Bureau.34 His contributions to the industry and his compassionate leadership style left a lasting impact on those who worked with him.135
